What is Random Access Memory (RAM) ?

RAM (Random Access Memory) is the hardware in a computing device where the operating system (OS), application programs and data in current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by the device's processor.

RAM is the main memory in a computer. It is much faster to read from and write to than other kinds of storage, such as a hard disk drive (HDD), solid-state drive (SSD) or optical drive.

Random Access Memory is volatile. This means that if a computer is turned on, the data will remain in RAM for as long as it's running but when you turn it off, they are lost. When the computer is rebooted, the OS and other files are reloaded into RAM, usually from an HDD or SSD.

Function Of RAM

RAM cannot store long term data due to its volatility. RAM can be compared to a person's short term memory and to a hard disk drive to a person's long term memory.

Short term memory is focused on immediate tasks, but can only look at a limited set of facts over time. When a person's short term memory is full, it will be able to refresh with facts that are kept in his or her brain's longer term memories.

What Causes Memory Data Corruption In RAM ?

1. Software Bugs

A program may accidentally write to memory that it is not supposed to, or it may read from memory that has not been initialized. This can overwrite existing data and cause corruption.

2. Hardware Errors

A RAM chip may have a defect that causes it to misread or miswrite data. This can corrupt data stored in the chip, or it can corrupt data that is being transferred to or from the chip.

3. Power Problems

If a power surge occurs, it can cause a high voltage spike to flow through the computer's circuitry. This can damage RAM chips and lead to data corruption. A power outage can also cause data corruption if it occurs while the computer is writing to memory.

4. Environmental Factors

Extreme heat, cold, or humidity can cause RAM chips to malfunction. This can lead to data corruption, or it can cause the computer to crash altogether.

If data corruption occurs in critical system files, it can cause the computer to crash.

If data corruption occurs in user files, it can lead to data loss.

Security Vulnerabilities

Memory data corruption can be exploited by attackers to gain access to a computer or to execute malicious code.
