Different Types of Computer Network

A computer network is a group of computers linked to each other that enables the computer to communicate with another computer and share their resources, data, and applications. You may classify a computer network in terms of its size.

There are many different types of computer networks, but they can be broadly classified into four categories :-

1. Personal Area Network (PAN)

A PAN is a small-scale network that connects devices that are close to a person, such as a smartphone, smartwatch, and fitness tracker. PANs typically use wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and ZigBee.

The PAN network provides a range of up to 100 meters between a person and devices that provide communication. Its transmission speed is very high with very easy maintenance and very low cost.

2. Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is the most frequently used network. A LAN is a network that connects devices in a limited geographical area, such as an office building or home. LAN encompasses two or more computers connected over a server. The two important technologies involved in this network are Ethernet and Wi-fi.

It ranges up to 2km & transmission speed is very high with easy maintenance and low cost.

LANs typically use wired technologies such as Ethernet, but wireless LANs (WLANs) are also becoming increasingly common.

3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

This type of computer system is used to connect computers on geographical distances by means of shared communication paths between cities, towns and metropolitan areas.

This network mainly uses FDDI, CDDI, and ATM as the technology with a range from 5km to 50km. It has an average speed of transmission. It's difficult to maintain and it costs a lot of money.

4. Wide Area Network (WAN)

A Wide Area Network, or WAN, is a type of computer network that links computers between large geographic distances by means of common communication paths. It doesn't limit itself to a single place, it extends all over the place.

It is also possible to define WAN as the group of local area networks communicating with each other up to a maximum distance of 50 km. It's got very little transmission speed, and it costs a lot of money for its maintenance.

In addition to these four main categories, there are also a number of other types of computer networks, such as :-

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN is a network that uses encryption to create a secure tunnel over another network, such as the Internet. VPNs are often used by businesses to allow employees to access company resources remotely.
