Network Device (Routers)

 What is Router?

Routers are a device that is connected to two or more packets switching networks or subnetworks. It is designed to serve two fundamental functions: traffic management among these networks through the sending of data packets over IP addresses allocated to them, and enabling a number of devices to connect via an identical Internet connection.

There are different kinds of router, but nearly all routers pass data from LANs (local area networks) to WANs  (wide area networks) covering the entire area. The LAN is a network of connected devices, which are limited to the specific geographical area. You're most likely to need one router for a LAN.

Types of Routers

1. Core Router

Most service providers use core routers, i.e. AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone or the cloud ISPs such as Google, Amazon etc. They provide maximum bandwidth to connect additional routers or switches. The core routers will not be needed by most small businesses.

Core routers operate at the "core" of a network and do not communicate with external networks.

However, the core routers may be used by very large businesses that employ many employees in various buildings and locations as part of their network architecture.

2. Edge Router
An edge router, also called a gateway router or just "gateway" for short, is a network's outermost point of connection with external networks, including the Internet. The edge routers are optimized for bandwidth so that they can connect to other Edge Routers in order to distribute data among users.

Wi-fi routers and the ability to manage local networks are normally not offered by Edge. They are usually equipped only with Ethernet ports, which can serve as inputs to the internet and some outputs for connecting other routers.

3. Virtual Router

Virtual routers are pieces of software which make it easy for some network functions to be virtualized in the cloud, and delivered as a service. These routers are intended for the larger enterprise with a complicated network needs.

They offer flexibility, easy scalability, and a lower entry cost. Reduced management of local network hardware is a further advantage of virtual routers.

4. Wireless Router

The modem is connected via a wireless router with an Ethernet cable. It disseminates the data through a conversion from binary code packets into radio signals, and wireless transmissions are carried out via antennae.

LANs are not built into wireless routers. Instead, they make WLANs Wireless Local Area Networks that link several devices on the basis of wireless communications.

5. Wired Router

The wired router also connects to your modem using an Ethernet cable, as in the case of wireless routers. It connects one or more devices in a network, sets up LAN and links them to the Internet using separate cables.
